What does that entire term of “W m-1 K-1″ mean in laymen’s english (please use as much detail as possible)?

Also, how would I convert it to something such as Watts per liter or some other unit of volume? thanks

Watts per meter per degree kelvin – more accurately

edit: sorry missed the ‘as much detail as possible.
Watt is a measurement of power, and is equal to energy per second – joules per second.
to convert kelvin to centigrade just add 273, they are basically the same temperature scale starting at different points. Absolute zero is the lowest possible physical temperature, in centigrade it is -273 in kelvin it is 0.

so {joules(energy) per second} per meter (of the substance you are measuring) per degree change in temperature (kelvin or centigrade).
So your measuring the heat energy required to increase the temperature of the far end of say a meter stick by one degree by heating the other end.
