UFC 111: St-Pierre defeats Hardy, and retains his title
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St-Pierre successfully defended his title via a unanimous decision against Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy in UFC 111 on Saturday March 27th 2010.
“It’s a win, but I’m not really happy with myself,” St-Pierre said in an article on UFC.com. “I made a lot of stupid mistakes.”
St-Pierre, who’ s record includes 20 wins and 2 losses, also admitted that he may have underestimated his opponent.
“I wanted to avoid the fight where my opponent was strongest, and fight where he was at his weakest, but he’s a lot better than I thought he was.”
Hardy, was willing to acknowledge St-Pierre as the better fighter.
“I can see why he’s the champion… He’s a strong athlete, very skilled,” said Hardy, who now has 23 wins, 7 defeats with 1 no contest (NC).
UFC 111: St-Pierre vs Hardy was held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
The event also featured a heavyweight fight between former heavyweight champion Frank Mir and Shane Carwin, with the latter claiming the interim UFC heavyweight championship belt in the absense of Brock Lesnar.
Carwin knocked out Mir at 3:48 of Round 1 and remained undefeated at 12-0.
Mir, on the other hand, now has 13 wins and 5 losses.
Other results
Kurt “Batman” Pellegrino defeated Fabricio “Morango” Camoes via submission (choke) at 4:20 of Round 2.
Jon Fitch and Jim Miller scored unanimous decision victories over Ben “Killa B” Saunders and Mark Bocek, respectively.
Saunders replaced Thiago Alves after the Brazilian mixed martial artist pulled out of the fight due to medical licensing issues, UFC.com reported.
Nate Diaz, meantime, scored a technical knockout win over Rory Markham at 2:47 of Round 1 while Ricardo “Big Dog” Almeida had a win over Matt “The Immortal” Brown by submission (choke) at 3:30 of Round 2.
Jared Hamman scored the first unanimous decision win in UFC 111 over his foe, Rodney “Shonuff The Master” Wallace.
Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares quickly defeated Tomasz “Gorilla” Drwal via submission (leg lock) at 0:45 of Round 1 while Greg Soto lost to Matthew Riddle by disqualification at 1:30 of Round 3.
Within Hours of learning opponent Thiago Alves did not pass a CT scan and was scratched from the UFC 111 main card, his opponent, Jon Fitch (21-3 MMA, 11-1 UFC), eagerly accepted to replace Jake Ellenberger (22-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and step up against welterweight Ben Saunders (8-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) on the UFC 111 main card.
